One of the best dog parks in Colorado, if not the best in the country, is the Elk Meadow Park Dog Off-Leash Area in Evergreen. It is such an amazing place that Jeffco Parks received a national excellence award from the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals for its layout.
The park is located on the south side of Stagecoach Boulevard, 1.25 miles west of Evergreen Parkway, and is part of the larger 1657-acre Elk Meadow Park. (Dogs on the north side of Stagecoach must be leashed.) The parking lot for the dog park is rather small, but there is a bigger one for the main park on the other side of the road. Be aware Stagecoach Boulevard is a busy road and residents often do not slow down as they drive by the park, so be careful before unleashing your dog. This is an extremely popular open space, especially on weekends, and the minimal parking often requires drivers to park on the road. However, once everyone spreads out within the park it does not feel crowded. On weekdays, it is fairly easy to get a parking spot.

At the entrance is a six-acre fenced-in area that runs parallel to the road. This section is separated into two parts, one of which is rather hilly while the other is a more sloping grassy open space. The drawback is that small dogs can easily squeeze through the gaps in the gates. This happened to us once with our 20-pound dog, and we had to run down the road to catch her. However, the true treasure of the park is the area on the other side of the fenced section. This can be reached through a gate at the back of the fenced park or by taking a trail from the parking lot down around the fence.
The entire off-leash area consists of 107 acres for dogs to run free, under voice command, of course, and 3.2 miles of nature trails. The property is truly beautiful with gorgeous mountain views and a stream flowing along one of the trails. For a shorter walk, take the .8-mile Waggin’ Trail loop after exiting the back side of the fenced park. At the entrance there are usually containers with plastic bags to pick up after dogs as well as dog bowls filled with water.
Dogs love it here. Humans are asked to stay on the trails, but dogs will run through the meadows, scramble up rocks, play in the stream and examine every tree in this doggy playground.
