Have more fun decorating your windows this Halloween with moon silhouettes. You can head to the mall and buy pre-made ones for a small fortune, or you can make your own for pennies. This is an extremely easy and inexpensive way to dress up your home for Halloween, and your kids will enjoy helping you.
The project below will describe how to make a moon bat silhouette that takes only a few minutes to complete, but any image can be used instead of bats.

Moon Bats Silhouette
What you'll need
- One piece of yellow, white, or light orange 12x12 scrapbook paper
(You can also substitute scrapbook paper with tissue or plastic tablecloths, depending on the light source behind the window. Obviously, the heavier the material, the more light will be needed to light up the silhouette.)
- One piece of black 12x12 scrapbook paper, plus additional pieces to cover remainder of window
- Dinner plate
- A pencil
- Scissors
- Glue and tape
This is simple. Trace the plate onto the black paper and cut out the circle. (Keep the black cutout to make the bats.) Glue the circle onto the yellow paper.
Now search for images of free clip art bats online and print. This project used the same image in two widths: 11” and 5”. Tape the copy of the 11” bat onto the leftover black circle and cut out the image. Next fold the remainder of the black circle in half, tape the 5” pattern onto it, and cut out the two smaller bats at the same time. All that is left then is gluing the bats onto the yellow paper.
The final step is taping the finished product in the window and covering the rest of the window with black scrapbook paper. Now wasn't that easy?
If you have larger windows and do not want to block out all the light in your house, try this idea with the silhouette only and close your curtains in the evening. Also, if you have a larger area to cover, substitute black butcher paper to save money. If you are not a natural artist, tape the paper to the wall and use a projector to trace the image and then cut out. There is no limit on the designs you can use: ravens, clowns, zombies, gravestones, and so on. Be creative with it and have fun!
